The proposed Accessible Information and Communications Standard outlines how businesses and organizations will have to create, provide and receive information and communications in ways that are accessible for people with disabilities.

The proposed Accessible Information and Communications Standard will require obligated organizations to:

  • provide information and communication to people with disabilities in a way that accommodates their disability, and
  • make websites accessible.

On May 31, 2010, the Ontario government announced that it will integrate three standards into one streamlined regulation. The three standards are:

  • Employment
  • Information and Communications, and
  • Transportation.

The proposed integrated accessibility regulation will also include:

  • proposed timelines for compliance with accessibility standards
  • proposed framework for monetary penalties for businesses and organizations that do not comply, and
  • proposed designation of the License Appeal Tribunal as the tribunal to hear appeals relating to the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005.

The proposed regulation has been posted on Ontario's Regulatory Registry for public review and comment until October 16, 2010. Feedback can be sent directly through the Registry.
